Adding serial console port to Dockstar

Projects / Misc  Original pos date:03/28/2016

Some prep work to make a serial port on my Dockstar. I am using a Chinese 2.5" USB 2 enclosure on my Dockstar. It is a bit narrower than the Seagate drive. The connector on the drive is offset and so it leaves a bit of a gap on the left side which is perfect for this mod.

1. Solder up wires to Molex 4-pin latching connector on a small perfboard. Drill a hole near the edge.

2. I use clear epoxy to glue the connector to the case.

3. I put some heat shrink tubing on the wire to protect it from the sharp edge of the shield. I spliced the +5V to the USB cable as , but I am using this to power the PS/2 keyboard and ChibiTerm. (Normally you would want to use the +3.3V on the JTAG connector.)

4. I connect the wires to the 2mm plug to the Serial port/JTAG connector. (There are my other mods for RTC crystal and supercap backup)

5. This is what it looks like. I modified a vacuum pickup SMT tab for headers as a cover for the exposed connector.

Here are the pin out info that I used to connect things up: http://www.rudiswiki.de/wiki/DockStarSerialLink
