Urban Window Garden

Projects / Misc  Original post date: 02/01/2018

I have been wanting to do this for years, but never got around to doing it.  I bought some soil and seeds that was on sale in the dollar store the other day for $1.80.

Unfortunately it is still freezing outside and their isn't much of area next to the windows that I can use.

The double pane window glides on a L shaped track.

I use a piece of fibre board from a clementine box and drill a 1/8" dia hole above where the track sits.  I bent a 10 gauge solid copper wire into to a L shape to make a latch.

I levelled the board and bent the other end of the copper wire 90 degrees.  I square the bent with a pair of piers afterwards.  The hook is rotated 90 degrees to latch in the channel and can be released by turning.

This forms  a Cantilever to support the weight of the pot and board.  Cross-sectional view:

The center of gravity is a bit beyond the window frame but it is well within the board.

From left to right: Green onions, Parsley, Thai chili, and soon to be cherry tomato in a tall container.  The are planted in vacuum form food package which (I think) won't degrade under UV exposure.  The rectangular shape allow them to be flush to the window.

The green onions were in a sorry state because they did not receive enough of sunlight to grown strong.  A bit of grow light with 6500K LED strips helped a lot.

3 weeks later...    The green onions leaves are now stronger.

This is 2 months later in spring time.  The extra sunlight in the morning and fertilizers helps a lot too.  The tomato plant is now over 2 feet tall.
