Projects / KVM Switch Original post date: 09/02/2017
I have decided to mount this new KVM where my old one used to be. My concern is most the weight of the HDMI cables tugging on the mux.
I made a couple of these out of long staples from tangerine boxes.
They goes into the ventilation hole on the back side of the computer shelf. They are used to faster cable tie.
The hooks pivots on their two ends against the back of the metal sheet. They are pull down as the cable tie pulls the two sides together. This system locks the two hooks in place.
Because of the shape of the HDMI switch, it is difficult to mount. I put a piece of packaging foam behind the switch for added fiction. That seems to hold for now. A bit of packaging foam can be used to fill the gap under the USB connectors. I use a couple of small cable ties to strap down the USB MUX.
My sleevings finally arrived today. I have redone the connection with AWG#24 wires from some multi-conductor cable. It is better than the wires (AWG26) in the ribbon cable in terms of solderability and mechanical strength. The 1/8" sleeving adds a bit of mechanical strength is handy for making custom cables. I might order some additional sizes in the future.
